Welcome.
Hi, everybody!
My name is Phil Erickson. I am an English teacher with training in TESOL who’s passionate about literature and student-centered pedagogy.
If you're here, you must be interested in my personal practices and beliefs about education. I am dedicated to helping students develop their critical thinking skills. No matter where they end up in their lives, this will help them succeed, and it’s something that’s missing in too many classrooms. At the same time, it's essential to remember that your students are people too. I'm also determined to facilitate their personal growth. While I teach them to think critically, I want to help them develop their empathy and growth as human beings.
Much of the development of my personal pedagogy has been spent considering English Language Learners (ELLs). This group of students’ needs line up with the needs of all students: differentiated instruction, multiple opportunities to understand concepts, practical, hands on scenarios in which to engage with the content. My pursuits in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) have made me a doubly effective English teacher.
I’ve spent years honing my instruction delivery skills, and I’m ready to challenge all of my students to do the best work they can, while respecting them as intellectual individuals. Students need to be doing the bulk of the intellectual work in the classroom, while my labor happens behind the scenes. I refuse to simply present students with the conclusions I’ve drawn: I want them to construct their own meaning. Only then will we have the most thoughtful, productive members of society possible.
So. Welcome.
I’m thrilled you’ve taken time to check out my site, and I’d love to hear from you if you have any questions, comments, advice, and/or beef to pick.
This site will show you proof of my student-centered pedagogy, give you more of an idea of who I am as a person and as an educator through lesson plans I've developed, my teaching philosophy, my mission statement and my professional blog.
