TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
TESOL 101
This presentation contains the basics of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. A colleague and I developed it in order to summarize our experience with regards to TESOL for our peers, in order to share the knowledge we'd acquired and help them get a better handle on what to do with the ELLs in their future classrooms.
If you've ever wondered what teaching ESL is all about, here's your chance to get a glimpse into my experiences with it. And, as always, please message me! I'd love to talk more in depth about TESOL.
I've expanded the ideas in the latter half of this presentation and created a resource that informs my practice and that educators anywhere can use to better their ELL instruction. Here's a link (/uploads/9/5/4/6/9546108/effective_esl_instruction.docx, and if you want to know more, check out my "Works With Students as Individuals" tab here (http://philerickson.weebly.com/works-with-students-as-individuals.html).

The importance of interaction when instructing ELLs.
Whether you're teaching a class composed entirely of English Language Learners or a "mainstream" class with some ELLs mixed in, it's important to remember the necessity of interaction. I've done an in-depth analysis of the importance of interaction, which you can find here.
In that analysis, I found several truths. Research has shown that interaction is a vital means through which speakers learn a language. Having a conversation with another speaker requires a student to a) decipher the meaning of their speaking partner's statement, b) develop a response and c) deliver that response in a meaningful way. And then repeat. Interaction gives students a practical, actual circumstance through which to grapple with the English language, which will strengthen their linguistic skills.
Too often when we think of language learning we think only of guided exercises in a text book. And while that's an essential part of learning a language, it can't be the only part. It is through interaction with other speakers of a language that students can truly develop and practice their skills in a genuine context.
